Balboa Horizons’ Rock to Recovery musical therapy program gives individuals in all manner of recovery a chance to create original music working as a group—in essence, forming a band—with professional musicians also in recovery. This innovative program was launched and incubated right here at Balboa Horizons in Orange County, and now serves over 30 treatment centers around the country. Rock to Recovery was most recently picked up by Wounded Warrior as a therapeutic tool for trauma treatment for veterans recovering from PTSD.
Rock to Recovery was founded in December 2012 by Wesley Greer, a professional musician for over 20 years. Wes first found success as the founding member of Jive Records artist Hed P.E. as a guitarist, songwriter, and producer. After touring the world for eight years, Wes left the band for a lifestyle change and ultimately landed in rehab. Then in 2010, at almost three years sober, he was approached to play with the legendary nu metal band Korn. He joined Korn and worked with them as their touring guitarist for the next several years, headlining shows in 42 countries for crowds of up to 80,000 people, and appearing on a number of recordings and cable and TV shows. Wes’s music has been featured in many feature films, video games, radio, and television shows.
During Wes’ time in treatment, he recognized the important role that music played in his own recovery. He also realized the power of music as a therapeutic tool within a group setting, and its glaring omission from standard treatment methods. It became his dream to create a musical therapy program that could help those in need, and Rock to Recovery was born.
Since its inception, Rock to Recovery has worked with over 30 different treatment programs, at 65 locations from San Diego to Malibu, and Las Vegas. Over 225 Rock to Recovery sessions are held each month—several thousand bands have been formed, and several thousand songs have been written and recorded.
