What to Bring to Alcohol Rehab: A Packing List

What to pack for alcohol rehab is probably the last thing on your mind, and rightfully so. You are taking a major step toward a new life, so here is one thing to make the process easier.

A Packing Guide for Rehab:

The treatment facility will have washers and dryers available, so you only need about a week’s worth of clothes. You can wash your belongings as needed, so make an effort not to overpack. Space in your room will be limited, so just bring what you know you will wear on a regular basis.

When looking at what clothes to pack, think comfort. What can you wear and wash easily?

Pack active clothes for exercise, a couple nice outfits for family night and other community activities, and jackets and other items you can layer, depending on the weather during your stay.

You will want athletic shoes, plus comfortable shoes to walk around in.

Personal toiletry items that you use everyday are fine. Take your toothbrush, shampoo, soap, and any other bathroom or shower items you need.

You can pack your own alarm clock, pillow, blanket, radio, stuffed animals, and pictures if you would like. Personal items are fine, as long as they do not violate the rules of your specific alcohol rehab facility.

Your bags will be searched so be sure to check everything that you’ve packed, and do not bring any of these items:

    • Anything with alcohol in it, including mouthwash, hairspray, and hydrogen peroxide

    • Scissors, switchblades, knives of any kind

    • Provocative clothing or any items with drug or alcohol logos, or profanity, on them

  • Candles or incense

There is no need for nice jewelry.

While you are getting sober, you will probably want items that make you feel most comforted. As you pack, be mindful of what items will help you throughout the rehab process.
