Returning to College Post Rehab

by Balboa Horizons | March 16, 2017

Many Balboa Horizon clients have taken time off from college to attend addiction treatment. As the 2016-2017 academic year approaches many of our alumni will return to school to finish their coursework. Here is a checklist of tools to use to make sure the transition back is a smooth one:

Therapy – Before you get back on campus make sure that you make arrangements to see a counselor or therapist once a week. A huge transition like going back to school can be difficult for those in early recovery. A weekly therapy visit for the first six months of the transition is strongly recommended. If you’re anxious about finding a new therapist read our article about selecting a therapist post-rehab here.

Housing – Make sure that the housing you choose best suits your recovery. Whether it be a dorm, sorority house or renting a room off-campus it should be safe and not trigger addictive behaviors. Consider the noise level, party scene and interests of your roommates and neighbors before you decide on a house.

Nutrition – Look into the available food options at the university. Look online at what the cafeteria serves, where the local grocery stores, farmers markets and cafes are. Considering the variety of places offered, make a list of ones you’d like to visit.

Medication – Make sure you call in and transfer your prescriptions to a pharmacy near your school. Sometimes a prescription requires that you have your doctor call it in. Take care of this prior to your departure. No one want to be without their meds.

Connections – Will you be connecting with old friends on campus? If so, give them a call and let them know you would like to meet up. If not, look into campus clubs and activities you can be a part of. Connecting with others keeps us out of isolation, accountable, and out of old patterns.

Community Support – Finding local support through Alcoholics Anonymous is crucial. Check online for meeting location and times that work around your class schedule. Listen to the stories of other people who “have what you want in recovery” to be your sponsor.

Recovery Team – Be sure to connect with the recovery team at Balboa Horizons! We would love to hear from you and know how we can support you in this exciting time of life!
