Post Rehab Job Search

by Balboa Horizons | April 26, 2017

Post Rehab Job Search is an important part of the recovery process.  Addiction can complicate your employment history. For many professionals, use of sick days, vacation time, and short-term disability leave can secure their job while they are in treatment. But for those who lost their jobs due to addiction, or their addiction became their full-time focus, getting back to work can be daunting.

Know this, your physical and mental health is more important than any job. Period. Going to rehab and getting sober was absolutely the right choice. Finding work post-rehab can be difficult, but it’s not impossible – there are more opportunities than you think, and getting sober made you a better employee.

Here are a few tips to help you get back to work after rehab:

  1. Lean on your network

Referrals will be your most powerful job search tool. Everyone knows somebody. During your Post Rehab Job Search politely ask for assistance in your job search and follow through as a reliable candidate.

  1. Consider working with a staffing company or other employment agency

They have all the connections and will help you with your resume and interview skills. Temporary work can help you build your connections and your experience quickly. Many of them are looking to make permanent placements, so this is a great way to get your foot in the door.

  1. For larger gaps, add in some volunteer work

If you’re having a hard time finding work, don’t give up. Start volunteering to make sure these employment gaps don’t get too big. You can make new connections and build and maintain your skills while you continue to search.

  1. Work on your resume and interviewing skills

No matter the stage in your career, you should improve your resume and practice interviewing. Monster and CareerBuilder have great tips on how to make your resume pop.

  1. Approach transparency on a case by case basis

When you do get an interview, get a feel for bringing up your recovery. Some interviewers will appreciate the honesty and will be happy to help, others may look on it less favorably. Take it on a case by case basis and know that you have a right to privacy.

  1. Be relentless

Any post-rehab job search will take time. Be resilient and be patient. You went through a major life change, and sometimes it takes a while for your professional life to catch up. You will find something, but you have to put forth an active effort to make this next step.

Work is crucial in building your new stable life. Utilize your resources and tap into your tenacity. You will be surprised at the life you can create for yourself.
