A Daily Game Plan for Focusby Balboa Horizons | July 20, 2016
People who struggle with drug and alcohol addictions frequently struggle with focus. Author and CEO coach, Peter Bregman has created this ritual for focus that many are finding useful. Check it out:
The first 5 minutes of the day are devoted to looking at your priorities. Take a look at your to-do list. What MUST get done today? What has been put off for the past 3 days? Write those at the top of your list.
You’ve now got your goals for the day all set, but our plans have a way of wandering away from us, so plan to check in with yourself at regular intervals to see if you’re on track and, if not, steer back on course. Plan on this pause to take up about 8 minutes of your day.
“Set your watch, phone, or computer to ring every hour and start the work that’s listed on your calendar. When you hear the beep, take a deep breath, and ask yourself if you spent your last hour productively. Then look at your calendar and deliberately recommit to how you are going to use the next hour. Manage your day hour by hour. Don’t let the hours manage you,” says Bregman.
Finally, at the end of every day devote another 5 minutes to mentally reviewing the answers to these three questions:
- How did the day go? What success did you experience? What challenges did you have?
- What did I learn today? About myself? About other people? What do I plan to do differently or the same tomorrow?
- Whom did I interact with? Anyone I need to update? Thank? Ask a question of? Share feedback with?
