10 Benefits of Not Drinking Alcohol

by Balboa Horizons | June 23, 2016

Whether you choose not to drink alcohol because you identify as an alcoholic or you simply don’t like the taste, there are many benefits from ditching the booze. Here are 10 of them:

Presence – The opiate effects of alcohol can be relaxing and ease social anxiety for some. Yet, like any uncomfortable situation or craving, anxiety will pass if you ride it out. Many people have found that abstaining from alcohol and sitting through their social anxiety has actually reduced their anxiety. In place of their anxious thoughts is the ability to be present and thankful for the moment as it is.

Awareness – Alcohol tends to make people drop their guard. Many say and do things they usually wouldn’t (#DrunkDial.) Staying completely aware of one’s actions and thinking through the consequences of them can keep life going in a desirable directions.

Recalling Memories – Some people black out when they drink alcohol. Not remembering the friends or experiences they had. When you don’t drink you can soak in all of your experiences and fondly recall them later.

More Focus in the Morning– Hangovers can be rough. You feel tired and sometimes nauseous. When you don’t drink you can get a head start at doing the things you love.

Healthy Skin – Alcohol causes dehydration affecting the suppleness of the skin. Just eliminating alcohol alone will keep you bright and beaming.

Healthier Body – Over time drinking alcohol can affect the liver and pancreas. In some cases even causing sclerosis of the liver and/or pancreatic cancer. Eliminating alcohol removes these problems altogether.

Alternative Beverages – When the option for alcohol is out it gives you the opportunity to try something new. A sparkling kombucha, a healthy green juice or a shot of wheatgrass can not only be a fun change but also very healthy for you.

Saving Money – Just two glasses of wine could add $20 to your dinner tab. Leave out the booze and add some cha-ching back into your wallet.

Freedom to Cruise  When you’re drinking you can’t be driving. So if you’re drinking at a party that turns into a dud you’ll end up stranded. If you don’t drink a world of opportunities is your oyster.

Creating New Experiences – If you have been a drinker in the past and choose not to be you’ll experience dinners, parties, and weddings in a totally different way. Being sober for these occasions may surprise you to find that being more aware, mindful and present for life is actually a pretty rad thing.
