Orange County, California is not only an excellent place to get sober, it’s a fantastic place to visit. Each month, Balboa Horizons invites our clients’ loved ones to participate in our Family Program. Over the course of four days, family members learn to identify and address the problems they are facing and develop solutions that will help them on their own recovery journey. Afterward, some families choose to tag on a few extra days to unwind and enjoy the O.C. Often, we are asked for our recommendations on things to do and where to eat. Here is a list of some of our fav’s:
For a bike ride – Newport Beach
Known for its gorgeous coastline and sunsets, Newport Beach rarely disappoints. Take it all in by renting a few bikes on the beach and cruising the boardwalk.
For some quiet time – Table Rock Beach
If you’re not a fan of the huge crowds that gather at Newport and Huntington Beach you should head south to Laguna. There you’ll find Table Rock Beach nestled in a small cove. Bring lunch, a book, some sunblock and take in the crystal blue waters.
For fun on the water – Duffy Boat
These little boats allow you to kick back and explore the bay on your own. Anyone with a drivers license can navigate one. Cruise the Newport Bay around sunset for some spectacular views.
For exercise on the water – Paddleboarding
Paddleboarding is a fun and easy water sport. You stand on a wide board while using a paddle to move across the water. Doing it with a group of friends can be a ton of fun.
For light hiking – Crystal Cove
Crystal Cove is an even hiking path along the Pacific Coast. It’s covered with wild flowers and greenery-it never disappoints.
For a yoga class- YogaWorks
YogaWorks offers a variety of classes for beginners to advanced yogis. You can rent a mat at the studio and even shop for some new yoga clothes, just in case you forgot yours at home.
For some shopping – Fashion Island
Fashion Island has everything from large department stores like Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom’s to smaller niche stores like Urban Outfitters and Ray Ban. We don’t encourage retail therapy, but if you must this is the place to go.
For coffee – Kean Coffee
Started by the founder of DIedrichs coffee, Kean coffee knows how to make a mean brew from a good bean. Don’t forget to order an acai bowl while you’re at it. It’s a So Cal favorite, a mix of acai berries, granola, bananas, coconut flakes and honey. You can hashtag that #Yum.
For an epic sandwich – Cest Si Bon Bakery
Just like a french bakery, Cest Si Bon makes their baguettes on site. You can design your own delicious masterpiece while choosing from a variety of their fresh meat, cheese and veggie fillings.
For gluten-free eats – Greenleaf
Greenleaf is right around the corner from Balboa Horizons. It offers organic, gluten-free options like sandwiches, salads, fresh juices, seasonal entree’s and desserts. A favorite of the locals.
For Mexican food – La Villas El Ranchito
Just two and half hours from the border of Mexico, So Cal has excellent Mexican restaurants. La Villa’s has some of the best tacos and enchiladas in town!
