90 Day Extended Care Treatment Plan
Evidence is building to support the 90-day rehabilitation model, which was stumbled upon by Alcoholics Anonymous where it is suggested that new members attend at least one meeting a day for the first 90 days of recovery. Research indicates that the 90-day time frame is approximately how long it takes the brain to recover from the immediate effects of drug or alcohol abuse. Researchers at Yale have documented what they call The Sleeper Effect, a gradual re-engaging of proper decision-making and analytical functions in the brain’s prefrontal cortex after an addict has sustained from use for at least 90 days. Although 90-days has become widely accepted as the typical duration of an initial stay in a rehabilitation center, it is by no means a concrete time frame for everyone seeking treatment. We understand that each case is different and includes various factors that will affect the duration of treatment required, however, we do support the 90-day treatment model as a solid starting point.
Balboa Horizons’ 90-Day Extended Care Treatment is the core of our holistic healing program for women. Overwhelming evidence shows that 90 days sober marks the beginning of both the physical and mental benefits of sobriety. However, our program is designed to do much more that simply give our clients 90 days of sobriety. It is about giving them the appropriate amount of care to foster a continued recovery. We believe that our 90-Day Extended Care Program provides a solid foundation for lasting sobriety.
In a study released in April 2007, the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs stated the following:
Women differ from men in many aspects, including: their reasons for initiating substance abuse, the consequences they experience, the barriers and motivations for entering treatment, treatment services needed, relapse risks and recovery support needs.
The report suggests gender-specific treatment as the most successful method of rehabilitation, and goes on to conclude that effective gender-specific programs possess the following characteristics:
• Comprehensive
• Trauma-Informed
• Provide and environment where women feel comfortable and safe.
• Address the different-
1. Pathways to substance use/abuse unique to women.
2. Consequences of use/abuse unique to women.
3. Treatment needs unique to women.
4. Relapse Prevention needs unique to women.
The majority of co-ed 90-Day Extended Care treatment programs will fall short when it comes to women’s recovery. They simply do not have the resources to give women the individual care they need or the in-depth understanding of women-specific issues related to recovery. Co-ed clinical programs typically become generalized and distracting, failing to address the core issues behind addiction. They simply cannot provide a safe haven for women in recovery. Balboa Horizons is the only state licensed treatment facility in Newport Beach dedicated exclusively to women.
Details of 90-Day Extended Care Treatment Plan
Balboa Horizons is a highly individualized program. Based on the initial evaluation by case manager and primary therapist, each client will be provided with any additional referrals needed in regard to medical and/or psychiatric care. Once the client is stabilized, we develop a specific treatment plan tailored to their needs during the first month of treatment. As a client progresses through our program, her treatment plan will be updated to attend to any development that arise. In regards to visitation and contact policies, we use a progressive phase system that allows clients to receive more freedoms and privileges based on her progress and participation in the program and following evaluation and approval by the treatment team.
We provide numerous services to our clients throughout their stay including 24-hour supervision by our residential manager. Client medication is monitored and drug testing in conducted multiple times a week on a random basis. Clients are transported to and supervised during all off-campus activities. We ensure that each client has access to a loving and experienced staff member any time they are in need of support.
Clients will attend numerous 12-Step meetings in the community along with our weekly alumni group. The alumni group is a chance to enjoy a meal and fellowship with our graduated clients. This offers our clients inspiration and hope by allowing them to see examples of the transformation that is possible when they apply themselves to the program.
The clinical component of our program includes: two daily group sessions led by remarkable clinicians on the Balboa Horizons staff. These groups include Group Process, Creative Expression Therapy, Relapse Prevention, Integrative Therapy and Life Skills. Clients will also have weekly sessions with their case manager and primary therapist and additional sessions may be provided as necessary.
We believe it is important that clients are exposed to sober socialization and increased physical activity in new sobriety. We offer many outdoor groups and excursions as well as scheduled self-care appointments. From morning beach walks and gym workouts to yoga classes and massages, we try to keep the women in our program engaged in a healthy lifestyle while they are working on their recovery.
