Understanding the Millennial Generation

Only 54% of Millennials are Employed

One in four young adults between 18 and 34 years old (millennials) say they have moved back in with their parents after living on their own and according to the Pew Research Center, only 54% of American adults ages 18 to 25 are currently employed, the lowest percentage since the government began collecting data 60 years ago. Breaking from tradition, this generation may grow up to be less wealthy than their parents’ generation.

Critics Say Millennials are Lazy

Every generation probably feels like it has gotten the short end of the stick, but critics really love to hate on millennials. They call them the lazy generation, the entitled generation, and the “me me me generation.” Based on the young people we know and work with, these stereotypes couldn’t be farther from the truth. Millennials want to work–and despite being shackled by debt, recession, and the jobs crisis–they aren’t motivated by money. Rather, they’re driven to make the world more compassionate, innovative, and sustainable.

Millennials – Looking at the World through Their Eyes

While it’s easy to criticize millennials for living in bubble worlds, where they act as if they are in a planet constructed of their own minds and the only consequences that matter are their own thoughts, whims or desires, it’s more important to look at the situation that inculcated them in this view.

One millennial told us this:  Millennials have never grown up in a stable society. For them, the USA was always a half third-world nation, wracked by crime, corruption, public filth, and with “culture” composed of fast food and horrible pop stars. They grew up with hip-hop, pornography and television violence as the norm. They generally come from broken homes, where divorce, infidelity and familial strife are everyday events. They do not have any expectation of meeting a partner with a low sexual partner count, which is determinative of likelihood of divorce, and thus they expect the same for themselves.

In short, much like abuse victims, millennials have zero expectation that any of the big decisions in life will be determined by their own actions. All is in the hands of the external, in this case the collective formed of other people’s bad decisions and the decision of egalitarian society to defend their right to whatever insanity they can pay for.
