Early sobriety for your loved one is a time when new identities are being formed, sobriety tools are being utilized and honed, and the challenge of living life on life’s terms is continually tested. Holidays are generally stressful – a family experiencing their first holiday with a newly sober family member may find these tips helpful for the time they are together.
How to help Loved Ones IN Early Sobriety through the Holidays
- Let go of control and the need to dictate their recovery.
- Understand their need to be in control of their recovery.
- Support and encourage their recovery. (Going to meetings, calling sponsor, contacting case manager, ect.)
- Ask about having alcohol present, and understand their concerns around it (if they have any.)
- Have healthy communication and boundaries.
- Adjust “unhealthy” holiday family rituals.
- Let them be just another one of the family members; try not to make them the center of attention.
- Don’t shame them for what happened in the past.
- Don’t encourage too much future thinking. They are learning to live one day at a time.
- Encourage them to relax, and keep a stress-free environment. Overthinking things can be a large “trigger.”
